Statement from Bestmed CEO, Dries la Grange, regarding the CMS ruling and subsequent media questions

I view the C ouncil for Medical Schemes ’ action to remove Trustees from Bestmed’s Board last week as extreme ly harsh and a great disappointment to say the least . The Council seems to not have considered the effect s of these drastic measures on Bestmed’s members’ interests, which it is obliged to protect, nor the reputation of the Scheme and the Trustees concerned. They seem to ignore that, prior to this action , Bestmed had , for a number of years, provided its full and unconditional cooperation to the Council to resolve all issues and concerns that were raised by it relating to th e matter in question ”, said Dries la Grange, Bestmed CEO

Bestmed Medical Scheme is committed to good corporate governance .

The Council for M edical S chemes (CMS) informed the Scheme on Thursday 13 th November 2014 that nine members of the current Board of Trustees of Bestmed would be removed from office with immediate effect . Although these members of the Board of Trustees have been removed , the registered Rules of the Scheme make provision for the immediate filling of v acanc ies by the remaining members of the Board. The Board has bee n reconstituted and is fully functional. It will meet during the week of 24 th November in order to elect a Chairperson, Vice - Chairperson and statutory committees’ members.

Bestmed, one of SA’s leading medical schemes, announces its merger with SAPPI medical scheme as of 1st April 2013.

This merger, which was approved by the Council for Medical Schemes in March this year, will increase the Bestmed’s membership by 3500, growing its membership to just over 81 000 principal members and positioning the scheme as a strong competitive player in the healthcare sector.
