South Africa's Top Athletes on their Marks at the Bestmed Tuks Race

Johannesburg: 15 February 2012: Two of the top female athletes, who represented South Africa at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, will be among the runners at the Bestmed Tuks Race on 16th February 2012.

Irvette van Zyl, the winner of the 2012 Spar 10km women’s race and Rene Kalmer, who walked away the Bestmed Tuks Race 21km champion in 2012, are determined to break records at Gauteng’s biggest road running race this year.

“The Bestmed Tuks Race, comprising 21km, 10km, 5km and 1km race distances, grows in popularity and stature each year and this is proven by the calibre of athletes it attracts. Our association with Tuks on this race is in line with our wellness strategy of encouraging the nation to be active,” says Alan Fritz Executive Head: Sales, Marketing and Distribution at Bestmed.

Over 13 000 runners, including top athletes and social runners are expected to hit the roads of Pretoria.  Other top athletes who will participate include the 400 metre hurdles Olympic athlete, LJ Van Zyl and Gladwin Mzazi, who will race in the 10km in preparation for the national championships.

“This is an event that the whole family can participate in and good health should be something that the entire family is involved in. From Tuks, Professor de la Rey will participate in the 10km race and Alan Fritz of Bestmed will walk the 5km distance,” says Professor Gloudien Spies.

“We are grateful to Bestmed for their sponsorship of this event over the last three years, as their involvement has enabled this race to become one of South Africa’s sought after road running events,” adds Spies

Both Fritz and Professor de la Rey are determined to set their own records this year and will work harder next year to improve their records.
